- A one-year-old girl tragically died from choking on milk in Kolhapur.

- Doctors advise elevating infant heads during feeding to prevent choking.

A devastating incident has occurred in Chandur village, Kolhapur district, where a one-year-old girl, Riva Vicky Kamble, died late on Wednesday night after choking on milk. This tragedy echoes a similar event from just two weeks prior, on August 13, when a one-month-old boy in Kolhapur also died due to choking during breastfeeding.
Riva had been unwell with a fever and had received medical attention on August 25 and August 26. However, while drinking milk from a pot on Wednesday evening, she suddenly experienced breathing difficulties. Rushed to IGM Hospital, doctors attempted to save her, but she was pronounced dead. The death certificate indicated respiratory failure caused by milk aspiration and tracheal compression.
In light of these incidents, Kolhapur-based paediatrician Dr. Omkar Salokhe stressed the importance of safe feeding practices. He advised parents to ensure infants' heads are elevated at a 45° angle during feeding and to hold them upright afterward for burping. Dr. Salokhe also cautioned against feeding a crying or excessively laughing baby due to increased choking risks.
