5 Jul
Summary
- A Karnataka Public School's compound wall collapsed due to heavy rainfall.
- Toilets were also damaged, with the foundation weakened by recent earthmover use.
- Tourists escaped unharmed when a tree fell on their car near Cauvery Nisargadhama.
Continuous heavy rainfall over the past two days in Ponnampet has led to significant damage at a Karnataka Public School. The compound wall of the school has collapsed, and its toilets have been damaged.
The incident occurred after soil was removed from the wall's base using heavy machinery, weakening its foundation. With the ongoing rains, the soil loosened further, causing the wall's eventual collapse. Villagers are urging for a permanent barrier and temporary protective measures.
The school's headmaster expressed concern that the remaining wall is unstable, especially as the rainy season has just begun. He warned of potential damage to the school building and toilets if the wall completely falls.
Separately, tourists from Madikeri experienced a close call on Sunday when a tree fell on their car. The vehicle was parked in a lot outside Cauvery Nisargadhama in Kushalnagar. Fortunately, the tourists and the driver escaped unhurt despite the car sustaining damage.
