Upon confronting the kangaroo, the man was subjected to a brutal assault, sustaining deep wounds to his stomach and back, as well as other injuries. He described the attack as brief but intense, crediting rolling onto his stomach for preventing worse injuries.
The relentless attack ceased only when the man's companion intervened, striking the kangaroo with a shovel. The kangaroo reportedly retreated to the dam and remains at large. The injured retiree received several hours of medical treatment for his extensive injuries.
