Summary
- Swimmer treated for foot lacerations after unknown marine life attack.
- Jones Beach swimming suspended, then resumed after no threats observed.
- Drone surveillance increased due to recent shark sightings.

A swimmer at Jones Beach experienced a minor foot injury after an encounter with unidentified marine life on Friday. State officials confirmed the swimmer suffered lacerations to their right foot and received treatment. Following the incident, swimming at the beach was temporarily halted but later resumed after marine patrols found no sharks or other dangerous creatures in the vicinity.
This event, occurring around noon, is suspected to be the first shark attack in New York this season. The incident coincides with a period of heightened shark activity, with sightings at Rockaway Beach and Point Lookout Beach causing intermittent closures. Advanced drone technology, with an expanded fleet of 46 camera-equipped drones, is being utilized to monitor waters for sharks, contributing to an increase in reported sightings.
Shark attacks remain extremely rare globally. In 2025, the United States recorded only 25 unprovoked attacks, including one fatality. Jones Beach last reported a suspected shark attack in June 2025, where a woman sustained minor leg cuts, believed to be from a juvenile sand tiger shark.
