Massive Fire Engulfs Jersey City Buildings
1 Aug
Summary
- Firefighters battled a blaze that spread through two buildings.
- Fifteen residents from four families were displaced.
- Six firefighters sustained minor injuries during the incident.

A significant fire erupted on a Thursday evening in Jersey City, originating in a basement garage and rapidly engulfing two buildings on Stegman Street. Thick black smoke billowed into the night sky as the flames climbed three floors and breached the roof. Fire officials reported that approximately 80 firefighters, with assistance from Bayonne crews, were on the scene for about 90 minutes to bring the intense blaze under control.
The fire spread through concealed spaces within the walls of both structures, complicating efforts to extinguish it and requiring extensive work to dismantle roof areas. Difficult weather conditions, including high humidity, also challenged the responding crews, leading to minor smoke inhalation injuries for six firefighters. A grandmother who escaped one of the burning buildings was also hospitalized with minor injuries.
In total, 15 residents from four families were displaced by the fire. The swift spread and destructive nature of the fire prompted a multi-alarm response to ensure adequate personnel for relief. The investigation into the exact cause of the fire is currently ongoing.
