Jakarta Landfill Disaster: Four Dead, Five Missing
9 Mar
Summary
- Garbage pile collapse at Jakarta's largest landfill killed four.
- Search continues for five missing people, likely trapped in waste.
- Heavy rain is suspected to have caused the unstable garbage mound.

Four individuals lost their lives and five remain unaccounted for following a significant garbage landslide at Jakarta's Bantargebang landfill. The incident occurred on Sunday when a massive mound of waste gave way, trapping several people, including truck drivers and scavengers. The collapse is believed to have been precipitated by heavy rains that saturated the area from Saturday evening onwards, destabilizing the enormous garbage accumulation.
Rescue efforts commenced immediately, with over 200 personnel, supported by 17 excavators, police, and military units, diligently searching the vast 110-hectare site. The landfill receives an estimated 6,500 to 7,000 tons of garbage daily. Authorities have expressed concern that more individuals might still be buried, as the search for the missing continues. Four people were confirmed to have survived the tragic event.
