Italy Devastated by Twin Waterspouts and Extreme Weather
9 Oct
Summary
- A double waterspout obliterated a school in Marsala, Italy.
- Extreme weather caused widespread flooding and damage across Italy.
- Ischia island experienced a two-hour telecommunications blackout due to storms.

A severe weather event struck western Sicily on Friday, with a double waterspout causing significant destruction in Marsala. The waterspout directly hit the Terrenove campus of the Alcide De Gasperi school, completely destroying it. Fortunately, all 273 children and staff were safely moved to a secure area, with only minor injuries reported. Emergency services responded promptly despite widespread damage to buildings, vehicles, and crops.
Across Italy, extreme weather continued to cause disruption. In Naples and its province, torrential rain led to flooded streets, a collapsed supermarket wall in Pozzuoli, and a power outage in Marano. The island of Ischia experienced extensive flooding and minor landslides, compounded by a two-hour telecommunications blackout that affected all six municipalities, severing internet and phone services.
Further north, a violent storm hit Castelleone in the province of Cremona, bringing heavy rain, hail, and strong winds. This resulted in flooded streets and basements, uprooted signs, and fallen trees. Scientists attribute the increasing frequency and intensity of such extreme weather events to the climate crisis driven by human greenhouse gas emissions, primarily from burning fossil fuels.
