Floods and Roadworks: Isle of Wight Residents Face Double Trouble
5 Feb
Summary
- Unprecedented rainfall caused severe flooding on the Isle of Wight.
- Major roadworks projects compounded travel difficulties for residents.
- Residents expressed frustration over increased travel times and costs.

Heavy rainfall recently caused unprecedented flooding across the Isle of Wight, impacting villages like Whitwell and leaving several roads impassable. The sheer volume of water, described by Councillor Claire Critchison as making it feel like 'living in a river,' overwhelmed drainage systems.
Adding to the impact of the flooding, major roadworks projects are significantly disrupting travel. These include a one-way system on Horsebridge Hill until April 17, diversions on the A3054 at Fishbourne until April 10, and ongoing four-week improvements on New Road, Brading. These closures have caused considerable anxiety, making it difficult for residents to return home, get to work, or reach ferry services.
Island Roads stated that winter is chosen for roadworks to avoid summer tourist season disruption, aiming to prevent temporary fixes. However, Councillor Critchison noted the current situation's real impact on residents, citing increased fuel and time costs due to lengthy diversions. A yellow weather warning for rain remains in effect for the Isle of Wight and surrounding areas.
