As of Monday, the death toll from a powerful earthquake in eastern Indonesia has tragically climbed to 100. The 7.7-magnitude quake, which struck East Nusa Tenggara province on August 15th, has severely impacted the region, damaging over 73,000 homes and displacing an estimated 180,000 residents. Thousands of aftershocks have rattled the island.
Relief operations are in their tenth day, with aid being distributed via helicopters, trucks, and motorcycles. More than 1,600 individuals sustained injuries from the seismic event. This earthquake marks Indonesia's deadliest since a 2022 quake in West Java that killed hundreds.
Despite the devastation, essential services like grocery stores and gas stations have resumed operations. However, search efforts continue in the rubble for potential victims, while over 40,000 people remain housed in tents and makeshift shelters. Local governments are working to accelerate recovery and administrative needs in the seven affected regencies.
