Monsoon rains have unleashed deadly floods and landslides across India, claiming more than 100 lives since July. Thousands have been forced to abandon their homes.
The state of Assam has borne the brunt of this crisis, with at least 87 confirmed deaths. Sivasagar district alone has accounted for 47 of these fatalities.
Other regions have also suffered significantly. Kerala has reported at least 15 deaths and seven missing individuals, with over 10,000 people seeking shelter in relief camps.
In the Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir, intense rain bursts have tragically resulted in at least 31 deaths. Meanwhile, Jharkhand witnessed at least 14 deaths due to lightning strikes.
These monsoon-related fatalities are an annual occurrence, exacerbated by climate change which scientists warn is making the South Asian monsoon increasingly perilous. Sri Lanka has also been impacted, with eight deaths and 12,000 displaced by monsoon flooding.
