Summary
- A fire at Ciudad del Este Shopping Center forced the indefinite closure of Nova Cinemas Curridabat.
- The venue housed one of the country's two Imax auditoriums, now both unavailable.
- Firefighters contained the blaze, but the theater's reopening timeline remains unknown.
A fire that erupted at the Ciudad del Este Shopping Center in San José province has forced Nova Cinemas Curridabat to close indefinitely. This closure is significant as the venue housed one of the only two Imax auditoriums in Costa Rica. The fire occurred Saturday morning, prior to the mall's opening, with only employees and gym patrons present. No injuries have been reported.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze to approximately 1,000 square meters, leaving about 5,000 square meters of the commercial center unaffected. While Grupo Zeta, the shopping center's owner, announced partial reopening on Sunday, the Nova Cinemas section remains closed with no timeline given for its return.
The Nova Cinemas Curridabat, featuring its digital Imax auditorium, originally opened in 2017. The remaining Imax screen in Costa Rica is located at another Nova Cinemas branch in the San José province, approximately 19 kilometers from the affected venue. Globally, over 1,800 Imax screens are in operation.
