On the morning of Monday, January 19, 2026, a severe "100-vehicle pileup" crash occurred on I-196 in Hudsonville, Michigan, due to icy conditions. The incident initially closed westbound lanes before expanding to both directions between exits 62 and 55. An estimated 30 to 40 semi-trucks were involved in the massive collision, which also extended into Zeeland Township.
Emergency crews, including sheriff's deputies, ambulance, and fire services, responded to the scene to treat the wounded and transport them to area hospitals. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported among those injured. Buses from Hudsonville High School and Max Transit were deployed to assist in moving stranded motorists to safety at the high school.
The highway was anticipated to remain closed for an extended period to facilitate the extensive clean-up and vehicle removal operations. This severe weather event occurred as much of Michigan was under alerts for snow, wind, and cold temperatures, with widespread whiteout conditions reported across the state.
