Hyderabad Authorities Demolish Damaged Illegal Building After Fatal Collapse

In Hyderabad, demolition efforts began late Sunday evening on an adjacent five-storied illegal building that was damaged by a prior collapse. This structure, built illegally on 50 square yards, previously served as a hostel for approximately 70 individuals who were rapidly evacuated due to structural integrity issues. The demolition process is anticipated to take at least two days.

The situation has created a ripple effect, causing residents of nearby buildings, including parts of Jayadarshini Society and Sterling Whitefield, to be evacuated as a precautionary measure. These evacuations are aimed at ensuring the safety of people in close proximity to the damaged structures.

The initial collapse involved a seven-storied under-construction building, resulting in the deaths of two workers on Saturday. The damaged adjacent buildings, including the one now being demolished, were affected by this earlier incident. The rapid proliferation of illegal buildings in the area, catering to IT professionals, has been highlighted, with authorities noting a lack of adequate space between such constructions.

Authorities are employing controlled sectional demolition techniques for safety. A crane and earthmover are in use to manage debris, facilitating the demolition's progression. Around 50 officials, along with Disaster Response Force and police personnel, are secured the area. The Town Planning & Building Officer for the zone has been suspended for failing to stop illegal constructions, and the owner of the collapsed seven-storied building is in custody.
