Six deaths have been confirmed in Florida following the impact of Hurricane Isaias. Governor Ron DeSantis stated that while the loss of life is saddening, the death toll was lower than in previous storms, attributing this to the precautions taken by residents and effective communication by local officials.
DeSantis confirmed that two of the deaths were previously unconfirmed, bringing the total to six. Causes included a fallen tree on a home, a fatality in a garage with a running generator, a car accident, and disruptions to medical treatment for two individuals.
As of Tuesday, approximately 5,000 people in Florida were still without power, primarily northwest of the storm's landfall. The state is providing free supplies to those affected by the hurricane.
Isaias, the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2026 season, marks a late start to hurricane activity. The last time the first hurricane formed this late was October 8, 1905. This is also the first hurricane to make landfall in the continental U.S. in two years.
