Hunters Narrowly Escape Grizzly Attacks in Montana Ahead of Hibernation

As of November 14th, 2025, Montana has seen a concerning spike in dangerous encounters between hunters and grizzly bears. According to recent reports, multiple hunters in the state narrowly escaped attacks from the powerful predators.

In one incident last month, two hunters came across a grizzly bear near an elk carcass. When the bear charged towards them, the hunters fired handguns into the air, successfully scaring the animal off. In a separate encounter, a lone hunter was charged by a grizzly but managed to use bear spray in self-defense, avoiding injury.

Fortunately, no people or bears were harmed in these recent incidents. However, the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks department warns that grizzly attacks often occur when hunting season overlaps with the bears' preparations for winter hibernation. As the animals search for more food sources, they can become more aggressive and unpredictable.

Experts emphasize the importance of being cautious and respectful around wildlife, especially in areas known to have significant grizzly populations. Hikers and hunters are advised to carry bear spray, avoid animal carcasses, and travel in groups to help deter potential attacks.
