A multi-storey car park in Hull is set to close for a full week to undergo essential repairs and cleaning following a car fire. The incident occurred on the third floor of the George Street car park on April 1st. Flames from the vehicle spread, impacting the roof area and leading to the closure of the top three levels.
No injuries were reported in the blaze, which fire services suspect was accidental. Hull City Council announced the entire car park will shut down starting Monday for seven days. Mark Ieronimo, the council's portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure, recognized the disruption caused by the partial closure but stressed that safety is paramount.
He stated that a thorough assessment of the damage was necessary, along with a comprehensive cleaning and repair program to ensure the site's safety and readiness for public use. In addition to the fire damage, complaints have surfaced regarding anti-social behavior within the city-centre car park.
The council is aware of issues such as drug use and individuals sleeping in the facility and is actively considering measures like hiring security guards to manage these concerns.
