Hot Cars Turn Deadly: Urgent Warning Issued
1 Jul
Summary
- Car interiors rapidly heat up, even with windows cracked.
- Children are highly vulnerable to heatstroke in vehicles.
- July is the deadliest month for child vehicular heatstroke.

An intense heat wave is currently affecting the central and eastern United States, prompting officials to issue critical warnings about the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside a parked car can surge to lethal levels within minutes, even on days with moderate outdoor temperatures and with windows slightly ajar. Infants and young children are especially vulnerable due to their inability to regulate body temperature effectively.
Authorities emphasize that July is the deadliest month for child vehicular heatstroke, with an average of about 40 child fatalities annually reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. This year, 31 child deaths were recorded in 2025, and nine have already occurred in the current year. The NHTSA stresses that cracked windows or car shade do not prevent these tragedies and urges extreme caution during this dangerous heat.
