Hospital Ceiling Collapses on Woman in Paediatric ICU
5 Feb
Summary
- A woman was injured when ceiling plaster fell in a paediatric ICU.
- The incident occurred at the Government District Headquarters Hospital, Tirupattur.
- Patients were moved to a new building following the collapse.

A ceiling plaster collapse at the Tirupattur Government District Headquarters Hospital injured a 45-year-old woman early Wednesday morning. K. Padma was sleeping on the floor in the paediatric ICU when a portion of the false ceiling and cement roof fell on her. The incident prompted the swift relocation of six young patients from the affected ward to a newer hospital building.
Health officials have attributed the collapse to the aging infrastructure of the hospital's old building, which was originally constructed in 1974. Despite renovations in 2022, the structural integrity of the ward proved insufficient. Repairs are currently underway, with PWD officials engaged in fixing the damaged roof. A video of the aftermath went viral, drawing public criticism.
The new building, which houses an advanced paediatric ICU, remains non-operational due to delays in medical equipment installation. However, following Wednesday's incident, children from the old ICU were moved to the functional unit in the new facility. The old building also accommodates other units, including a disability grievance office and a psychiatric care unit.
