Hollywood Hillside Collapses After Pool Overflows
19 Sep
Summary
- Unattended hose caused 7,000 gallons of water to flood hillside.
- Failing retaining wall collapsed, sending blocks through roof.
- No injuries reported; vacant building and pool area red-tagged.

A hillside collapse occurred in Hollywood after an unattended hose caused a swimming pool to overflow with approximately 7,000 gallons of water. This significant water saturation stressed a retaining wall, leading to its failure. Cinder blocks from the damaged wall crashed down the slope and breached the roof of a vacant building situated below.
Emergency response teams addressed the flooding and slope instability on North Wilcox Avenue. The LAFD reported siphoning off approximately 56,000 pounds of water from the pool to alleviate pressure. City officials subsequently red-tagged the vacant building and the pool area, indicating they were unsafe for occupancy.
While eight nearby apartment units were initially evacuated due to safety concerns, city engineers assessed the structures and found them stable. Residents have since been permitted to return to their homes as the immediate danger has passed. No injuries were reported during the incident.
