Urgent Recall: HiPP Baby Food at Risk in Austria
18 Apr
Summary
- HiPP recalled all jarred purées sold in Austrian Spar supermarkets.
- Tampering fears mean consuming some jars could be life-threatening.
- Products sold in other countries are confirmed to be unaffected.

Baby food manufacturer HiPP has issued a widespread recall for all its jarred purées sold within Spar supermarkets in Austria. This action was taken due to serious concerns that some products may have been tampered with, potentially introducing dangerous substances. HiPP stated that consumption of these affected jars could be life-threatening.
While only specific carrot and potato flavors were initially suspected of interference, the entire range of HiPP jarred baby food available at over 1,500 Spar locations in Austria has been withdrawn as a safety precaution. The company has reassured consumers that its products sold in other countries are not impacted by this incident. Austrian police are investigating and have noted that tampered products might be identifiable by a white sticker with a red circle on their base.
Spar supermarkets have confirmed the recall and are offering full refunds for returned products. This recall impacts jars purchased at Eurospar, Interspar, and Maximarkt stores as well. HiPP strongly advises parents not to feed their children any baby food jars purchased from Spar. This recall follows similar incidents in January and February of this year where Nestle and Danone recalled infant formula globally due to contamination fears.
