Nepal Glacier Collapse Sparks Urgent Himalayan Warning
31 Aug
Summary
- Glacier collapse in Nepal highlights growing Himalayan instability.
- 407 glacial lakes in Hindu Kush Himalaya risk bursting.
- Glacial lake floods increased nearly fivefold since the 1950s.

A recent glacier collapse in Nepal has intensified worries about the escalating hazards within the Himalayas. The region's mountain terrain is becoming increasingly unstable due to rising global temperatures and retreating glaciers.
A UN-led study has pinpointed 407 glacial lakes across the Hindu Kush Himalaya range that are at high risk of bursting. This alarming finding correlates with a nearly fivefold increase in glacial lake outburst floods since the 1950s.
In response, areas like Sikkim are on high alert, with authorities mapping 85 glacial lakes. Of these, 17 have been identified as highly vulnerable. To mitigate potential disasters, sensors have been installed to provide crucial early warnings.
