A multi-day camping trip in Northern California ended with a successful rescue mission for 72-year-old Mary Beth Granbery. Granbery, a resident of Mount Shasta, embarked on her trip on September 28 and was expected back by October 1. When she failed to return, her family reported her missing after locating her camper van on October 3 at the Cabin Creek Trailhead.
Search and rescue teams from Siskiyou and Shasta Counties joined forces to find Granbery. On October 4, ground crews located her near Cabin Creek. She was alive but conscious, having suffered serious injuries from a fall down a steep embankment, including a severe knee injury, and exhibited signs of exposure. She was disoriented and nonverbal.
Due to the difficult terrain, the California Highway Patrol Air Operations team was called in. They hoisted Granbery from the trail and transported her to a landing zone, where she was transferred to an air ambulance. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center in Redding for treatment and is reported to be in stable, non-life-threatening condition.
