A couple on a hike in Washington state's Cascade Mountains faced a fight for survival when a severe snowstorm hit. While in the remote Enchantments wilderness, they were overcome by heavy snow and freezing conditions.
At approximately 5:26 p.m. on Sunday, the husband contacted 911, reporting his wife was unable to move due to their soaked clothing and the intense cold. Rescue attempts by air were repeatedly thwarted by the severe weather. Ground crews eventually reached the hikers around 3:30 a.m. Monday.
Tragically, Sybil Claborn, 45, was found deceased. Her husband was treated for severe hypothermia and transported to a local medical center. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of Claborn's death. This incident occurred amidst other recent hiking fatalities attributed to extreme weather conditions in different national parks.
