Security Guard Shields Campers During Deadly Texas Summer Camp Flood

Nearly 3 months ago, on July 4th, a devastating flood struck a Christian summer camp for girls in Texas, resulting in the tragic deaths of 27 campers and counselors. Security guard Glenn Juenke, who was on duty at the time, has now come forward to share his firsthand account of the harrowing experience.

Juenke, a 57-year-old retired Houston police officer, was initially in the camp office monitoring the worsening storm when the floodwaters began to rise rapidly. He quickly joined the camp director and his son in an attempt to evacuate the campers by car, but the waters soon became too dangerous to continue. Juenke then made his way on foot to another cabin, called the Wiggle Inn, where he decided the safest course of action was to hunker down and ride out the storm with the young girls inside.

As the raging waters surrounded the cabin, Juenke tried his best to reassure the terrified 9-year-olds, telling them, "We're not going anywhere. We're going to be OK." One of the camp counselors also led the girls in prayer. Juenke, who describes himself as a "big crier," says the tragedy has left him numb with grief over the loss of the children, counselors, and staff he knew.
