A late-night fire in a Richmond, Texas, barn was prevented from becoming a tragedy thanks to the heroic actions of a pet goose named Goosey. Around 1 a.m. on August 3rd, a fire ignited in the barn where approximately 60 turkeys and chickens were sleeping. The family's pet goose, Goosey, who typically sleeps in a stall near the chicken coop, was awoken by the flames.
Goosey began honking forcefully, a sound that roused Bert Gerber from his sleep. He grabbed a water hose and managed to put out the fire within minutes, preventing it from reaching the animals. Surveillance footage later showed Goosey waddling out of the barn and honking, which prompted Gerber to investigate. The Gerbers suspect the fire was caused by an overheated ceiling wire or an animal chewing on it.
The family recently adopted Goosey, a Sebastopol gosling, in May after their daughter Elaina, 9, fell in love with him at a poultry exposition. Initially hesitant, Chelsea Gerber agreed to bring him home. Goosey has since integrated into the family, enjoying his own plastic pool and sleeping arrangements in the barn.
Goosey's bravery has been widely celebrated online after Chelsea Gerber shared the video on social media, where it garnered over a million views. The Gerbers noted that Goosey seems unfazed and has even taken on a guardian role among the birds, sitting on a turkey's eggs to keep them warm. They are planning repairs for the barn, with hopes of potentially building a new one in the future.
