Summary
- Comedian Lio Cundiff plunged into icy Lake Michigan to save a baby.
- He barely knew how to swim but saved the infant from a stroller.
- Cundiff was hospitalized after the daring rescue due to chest pains.

A Chicago comedian performed a heroic rescue on Wednesday afternoon, diving into the icy waters of Lake Michigan to save an eight-month-old baby. Lio Cundiff, 30, was walking near Belmont Harbor when he witnessed a stroller being blown towards the lake by strong winds. Without hesitation, Cundiff dropped his belongings and plunged into the freezing water, despite admitting he is not a strong swimmer.
The stroller, which had zipped closed, made the rescue difficult, with both Cundiff and the stroller dipping below the surface multiple times. Cundiff managed to keep the stroller upright, a critical action that likely prevented the infant from drowning. Bystanders assisted in bringing Cundiff and the baby back to shore. The baby was found to be breathing and crying, and was taken to Lurie Children's Hospital for observation, listed in good condition.
Cundiff himself was later admitted to the hospital, experiencing chest pains and irregular heart readings attributed to the shock of the cold water. His friends have created a GoFundMe to help with his medical expenses. Cundiff also spoke out in defense of the baby's mother against online criticism, emphasizing that such an incident could happen to anyone and that the mother did not need further distress.
He expressed gratitude for being in the right place at the right time, stating his only thought was to keep himself and the baby afloat during the terrifying ordeal. Cundiff, who makes his living as a comedian, joked that this media moment was unexpected, as he typically hoped for such attention through his stand-up performances.
