A man lost his life over the weekend while cliff-jumping at Lekeleke Bay, a spot known as "End of the World," on Hawaii's Big Island. The victim, identified as 26-year-old Mathen Jackson, found himself in distress approximately 50 yards from the shore.
Ian Kowalczyk, a former firefighter and Navy personnel, witnessed the situation and immediately attempted a rescue. He and a friend worked to bring Jackson back to shore, but their efforts were hampered by rough conditions. A powerful wave then separated them, pushing Jackson back into the water.
First responders arrived on the scene and managed to retrieve Jackson's body. Despite their attempts to revive him through CPR, he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. Ocean Safety officials are using this incident to stress the importance of safety, advising people to stick to guarded beaches and avoid areas where they are unsure of the risks.
