Mudslide Rescue Intensifies Amidst Perilous Conditions

Rescue efforts are intensifying around Gyirong Port, with a focus on reopening National Highway G216, the main ground route to the disaster-stricken area. This route was severely damaged by a massive mudslide that originated on the Nepal side of the China-Nepal border on August 26, causing significant casualties and disruptions to infrastructure.

As of Tuesday evening, crews were within 700 meters of fully reopening the highway. Memorial ceremonies for victims were held on Tuesday morning. Rescuers have been meticulously searching a 0.7-square-kilometer area near Gyirong Port using specialized equipment.

Over 700 personnel and more than 300 machinery units are dedicated to restoring the land route. Simultaneously, supplies and additional rescue forces are being transported into the core area by air, highlighting the critical need for access. Firefighters are using a combination of mechanized excavation and detailed manual searches.

Challenging conditions, including steep terrain, heavy rainfall, and the risk of secondary disasters like landslides and collapses, are significantly hampering rescue operations. The mudslide's impact was amplified by a steep elevation drop and high speeds, traveling approximately 22 km. The narrow valley restricts heavy machinery, and deep mud slows progress.

Restoration of communications and power supplies is also underway. One damaged base station has been repaired, and 12 emergency stations have been set up. Power lines have been extended to within 1.6 km of Gyirong Port to support road-clearing operations. Secondary hazards, such as potential landslides and barrier lakes, are being closely monitored by emergency rescue teams using advanced technology.

Authorities are maintaining contact with the families of those missing, providing updates on the ongoing rescue efforts. Rope-ladder evacuation routes have been installed along G216 for rapid escape in case of sudden flooding or further mudslides.
