Guwahati Neighborhoods Parched for Days Due to Booster Pump Glitch
26 Oct
Summary
- Several Guwahati localities face water supply disruption for 3+ days
- Booster pump issue at South Central Guwahati water project reservoir
- Residents in elevated areas unable to purchase water from private suppliers
As of October 26, 2025, several localities in Guwahati have been facing a prolonged water supply disruption due to a technical issue with a booster pump at the South Central Guwahati water project reservoir. This reservoir is the largest of the city's four water projects.
The Guwahati Jal Board has confirmed that the booster pump, which is responsible for pushing water from the reservoir to the elevated pipelines serving higher areas, has experienced a glitch. Rectification work is currently underway, but the board has cautioned that a specific timeline for the restoration of water supply cannot be guaranteed, as it depends on the nature of the problem.
Residents of affected neighborhoods, including Kailashpur, Golokdham, Sakuntala Pukhuri, Hirimbapur, Amiya Nagar Hilltop bylanes, Rudra Nagar, and the upper part of Luitpur, have been facing the brunt of the water shortage. In some areas, the lack of motorable roads has prevented residents from purchasing water from private suppliers, forcing them to fetch water from distant streams.
