A Kansas grandmother, Barb Prier, experienced a life-threatening ordeal during a destination wedding in Cabo, Mexico, where she was celebrating her 50th wedding anniversary. While taking a walk on the beach on the wedding day, she was unexpectedly pulled into the ocean by a strong swell, referred to locally as 'mar de fondo'.
Prier was violently tossed by the waves, sustaining a head injury, a broken spine, and broken legs. She also had sand and seashells in her lungs, one of which was punctured. Wedding staff and guests with medical experience formed a human chain to rescue her and performed CPR.
Despite doctors' grim prognosis that she would never walk or talk again, Prier made a remarkable and full recovery, astonishing her family and medical professionals. The wedding continued as planned, with the groom's father, a doctor, ensuring the news was kept quiet until after the ceremony and honeymoon.
