Three elderly individuals died from apparent heat-related causes while hiking the Grand Canyon's inner trails in early June 2026. Temperatures in these areas frequently exceed 109 F during midday hours.
Park rangers and emergency personnel responded to two separate incidents. On June 12, a 72-year-old man was found deceased on the South Kaibab Trail. On June 16, a 67-year-old man and a 68-year-old woman were discovered dead on the North Kaibab Trail. Investigations into their deaths are currently underway.
These tragic events follow another recent heat-related fatality of a teenager earlier in June, who had attempted a difficult round-trip hike. An elderly man also died the previous year while attempting to reach the Colorado River.
