Pedestrian Deaths Soar 50% in Goa as Enforcement Plummets

As of October 11, 2025, Goa is facing a concerning spike in road fatalities, particularly among pedestrians. In the first three quarters of the year, 45 pedestrians lost their lives in road accidents, a 50% increase compared to the 30 pedestrian deaths recorded during the same period in 2024.

The situation worsened in September 2025, with a staggering 600% rise in pedestrian fatalities. Seven pedestrians were killed that month, compared to just one in September 2024. Additionally, there were no cyclist deaths until September, a stark contrast to the four cyclist fatalities during the same period the previous year.

Authorities attribute the surge in road accidents to a significant drop in enforcement. There has been a 50% reduction in the registration of traffic violation cases and a 39% decrease in fine collection compared to 2024. A senior police officer stated that the lack of enforcement has left no fear in the minds of riders and drivers.

The state government's instructions have led to this lapse in enforcement, which has had a direct impact on road safety. Fatal road accidents in Goa increased by 13% in the first three quarters of 2025, with the number of fatalities in September matching those of the same month last year.
