R. Aneesha, a 33-year-old Swiggy food delivery worker, faced a tragic accident on December 23, 2023, near Peroorkada, Thiruvananthapuram. A tipper lorry collided with her two-wheeler, resulting in severe leg injuries.
Initial surgeries were performed, but complications arose, ultimately leading to the amputation of her leg on August 11. Aneesha reported that Swiggy initially covered her first surgery after protests from gig worker unions but has since failed to provide continued medical support.
The company's adherence to its ₹2 lakh health insurance limit, despite bills exceeding ₹5 lakh, caused significant distress. While the remaining amount was eventually covered post-protest, ongoing support has been absent, forcing Aneesha to rely on fellow gig workers for financial assistance with medical bills and medicines.
Currently recuperating in a hospital in Marthandam, Tamil Nadu, Aneesha faces uncertainty about her future, being unable to work and support her family. Swiggy's fleet manager stated that procedures take time and that a government-issued disability certificate is required, which has proven difficult to obtain due to residency issues across state lines.
