Gateshead Flyover Demolition Delayed Until March for Building Removal

The planned demolition of the Gateshead Flyover, which has been closed for more than a year following safety concerns, will not commence until March at the earliest. This delay is attributed to the necessity of first demolishing the adjacent derelict Computer House building. This is crucial for gaining better access to the central part of the flyover structure.

The demolition of Computer House is expected to be completed by March. Council officials noted that the presence of asbestos in the former office block necessitates a highly cautious approach during its dismantling. Once this initial phase is concluded, demolition contractors are slated to begin work immediately on the flyover itself.

Preparatory actions are currently in progress, including the removal of traffic signs and the groundwork for installing props beneath the flyover. Additionally, monitoring equipment will be installed in nearby Metro tunnels to ensure the continued safe operation of trains during the demolition activities at ground level.
