Fuel Blunder: Drivers Wait Six Months for Payouts
15 Jun
Summary
- Motorists await compensation six months after buying contaminated diesel.
- The contaminated fuel caused vehicles to break down shortly after refueling.
- Drivers faced significant financial losses due to repairs and lost work.

Drivers who purchased contaminated diesel fuel from The Mount Service Station in Shrewsbury between December 1 and December 5 are still waiting for compensation six months later. The fuel was contaminated with water, attributed by the business's director to issues with "old pumps and tanks" that had not been properly maintained.
This contamination led to multiple vehicle breakdowns shortly after refueling. One affected driver, Andy Harrison, experienced a breakdown just yards from the station and estimated his total costs, including repairs and lost earnings, amounted to approximately £2,000. He reported a lack of communication from the petrol station regarding his reimbursement.
Another customer, David Bush, discovered issues while driving home, later connecting the problem to fuel purchased at the station after seeing similar complaints online. He incurred costs for fuel filter replacements, totaling £444.16 for one repair, and expressed that compensation should cover repairs and the contaminated fuel itself.
The station is supplied by Essar, which stated that the affected tanks were immediately taken out of service once the water contamination was identified and that the issue has since been resolved.
