Yellow Chemical Spill: Company Identified
12 Mar
Summary
- XL Plating and Machining allegedly spilled 900 liters of yellow substance.
- The substance contained hexavalent chromium, a potential carcinogen.
- Cleanup efforts are ongoing and will be paid for by the company.
A significant spill of a bright yellow substance, later identified as containing hexavalent chromium, occurred on Fredericton roads last week. XL Plating and Machining has been named by a provincial official as the company allegedly responsible for releasing approximately 900 liters of the chemical across 14 kilometers of road and highway.
While hexavalent chromium is classified as toxic and associated with cancer risks, health authorities have determined the risk to the public from brief contact is low. Public health is also not concerned about drinking water contamination. Remediation work, conducted by EFI Global, is nearing completion and will be at the expense of XL Plating and Machining.
Monitoring and testing of the affected areas will continue as the investigation concludes. The provincial government indicated that enforcement actions, potentially including charges and fines, may follow. Guidance has been provided for residents whose vehicles came into contact with the substance.
