France is grappling with a record-breaking wildfire season, with nearly 86,500 acres scorched, exceeding the total area affected in 2025. President Emmanuel Macron has pledged zero tolerance for arsonists, emphasizing that fires represent an attack on national territory.
Recent blazes in the Fontainebleau forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site, saw over 2,000 hectares impacted. Emergency teams worked to contain two fires there, which are now under control but still burning. Approximately 950 firefighters, supported by 120 military personnel, remain deployed to prevent reignition.
Investigations have led to the arrest of 59 individuals suspected of starting fires across the country. Two men, an 18-year-old volunteer firefighter and an 18-year-old student, have admitted to deliberately starting fires using gasoline and a cigarette, respectively. Both face charges of "destruction by fire" and are in pre-trial detention.
The fires have exacerbated the damage to Fontainebleau's exceptional biodiversity. Extreme heat and dry conditions, linked to climate change, are worsening the spread of fires throughout France and Europe.
