20 Jul
Summary
- Wildfire rapidly spreads near Frejus due to strong winds and drought.
- Several hamlets evacuated as flames threaten homes on the coast.
- Blaze scorched 180 hectares amid record high temperatures and dry conditions.

Wildfires are currently posing a significant threat to towns near Frejus on France's Mediterranean coast. Strong winds and severe drought conditions are rapidly fueling the blaze, which has necessitated the evacuation of several hamlets as flames approach residential areas.
Local prefect Simon Babre highlighted the extreme heatwave and dry conditions as major factors in the fire's quick escalation. By Sunday evening, the fire had consumed an estimated 180 hectares. The situation is exacerbated by forecast high temperatures, with Les Arcs experiencing average highs of 38 degrees Celsius, well above the historical norm for mid-July.
Train services between Toulon and Les Arcs have been suspended due to the fire. This event aligns with warnings from the World Meteorological Organization regarding increased wildfire risks in Western Europe due to record temperatures and sustained high heat.
