French Firefighters Battle Inferno Near Bordeaux

French firefighters maintained control over a significant wildfire west of Bordeaux overnight, which had led to widespread evacuations. The blaze, located in the Landes area, has devastated approximately 42,000 hectares of pine forests following an extended dry spell and multiple heatwaves. Crews, aided by international support, managed to contain the fire after a week of intense efforts.

However, conditions are expected to become more volatile with the arrival of the fourth heatwave this summer. Temperatures are predicted to hit 42 degrees Celsius on Wednesday, accompanied by dry winds that could reignite flames. This marks an unprecedented wildfire season for France, with the total area burned surpassing the previous record set in 2022.

Authorities evacuated about 220,000 individuals, including tourists and residents, as the fire threatened the Cap Ferret peninsula. Some residents south of the affected region were permitted to return as a smaller blaze near Biscarrosse was extinguished. Businesses near Bordeaux also closed preventatively as the fire approached within nine miles of the metropolitan area.
