France Wildfire: 400 Evacuated as Flames Scorch Forests
22 Jul
Summary
- Over 400 individuals were evacuated due to a fast-moving wildfire.
- The blaze consumed approximately 1,700 hectares of forested land.
- Nearly 1,000 firefighters worked to contain the extensive blaze.

A significant wildfire erupted in southern France's Var region, forcing the evacuation of over 400 residents as it consumed around 1,700 hectares of forest. The fast-moving blaze threatened communities located between Marseille and Nice.
Nearly 1,000 firefighters, bolstered by water-bombing aircraft and helicopters, worked tirelessly to combat the flames. Evacuations specifically impacted villages like Ponteves and Sillans-la-Cascade, with air crews constructing retardant barriers to halt the fire's advance.
Although four firefighters and two residents experienced minor smoke inhalation, and a fire engine was damaged, the fire has now been contained. This event underscores the heightened forest fire risk exacerbated by extreme dryness, early heatwaves, and drought conditions impacting France this year.
France has already witnessed nearly 40,000 hectares burn since the start of the year, significantly exceeding last year's total. This incident follows another recent blaze near Les Arcs-sur-Argens that destroyed homes and affected 200 hectares, and ongoing fires in the French Alps and Corsica.
