Europe Burns: France, Spain Battle Wildfires

Firefighters in France and Spain have made progress in containing vast wildfires that were raging near Bordeaux and Madrid. Officials reported that overnight conditions were calmer, with several flare-ups managed successfully.

In France's Bordeaux region, the situation near a nuclear missile factory has stabilized, and smaller fires elsewhere in the south have been brought under control. Spain's interior minister noted that fires around Madrid, the largest in the country's modern history, had not advanced in the past 24 hours, with evacuation orders lifted for half of the affected residents.

Despite these positive developments, authorities caution against complacency. A separate fire near Valencia in eastern Spain remained active and uncontrolled overnight. The office of the Bordeaux prefect warned that temperatures could reach 41 degrees Celsius (106 Fahrenheit) on Wednesday, with high winds and low humidity expected to persist.

These extreme weather events are linked by scientists to fossil fuel burning, making Europe the world's fastest-heating continent. Record heat has created parched vegetation, significantly increasing the risk of fires spreading, particularly when combined with strong winds. Over 300,000 acres have burned in Spain and France, leading to the largest peacetime evacuations in those nations' histories.
