France Flooded: Orange Alert Sparks Chaos
20 Jan
Summary
- Severe rainfall triggered major flooding across southern France.
- Roads and schools were closed, impacting 109 locations.
- The heavy rain alleviated a long-standing water shortage in the region.

Heavy rainfall has caused widespread flooding across the south of France, leading to significant disruptions. The Météo France weather service issued a code orange alert for three departments and the island of Corsica, warning of a rapid rise in river levels and potential flooding. Roads and schools across the region have been closed, with more than 40 roads impassable and schools in 109 locations unable to open. Emergency services responded to numerous calls, and one person sustained a severe injury in a weather-related incident. While the floods caused considerable disruption, the intense rainfall also addressed a critical water shortage that had been affecting the Pyrénées-Orientales department. Water restrictions have been lifted, and authorities confirmed that river levels and underground water reserves have been replenished.
