Ford Focus Stall Risk: 255K Vehicles Recalled
17 Jun
Summary
- Over 255,000 Ford Focus vehicles from 2012-2018 recalled for engine stall risk.
- Issue stems from a potentially malfunctioning canister purge valve (CPV).
- Ford is unaware of any accidents or injuries linked to this defect.

Ford has initiated a recall for 255,404 Ford Focus vehicles manufactured between 2012 and 2018. The recall addresses a potential defect with the canister purge valve (CPV), which could malfunction and stick in an open position. This malfunction, if not properly detected by the powertrain control module (PCM), can cause excessive vacuum in the fuel system. Such excessive vacuum can deform the plastic fuel tank, potentially leading to the engine stalling unexpectedly.
Symptoms may include a lit malfunction indicator light, inaccurate fuel gauge readings, or incorrect distance-to-empty estimations. Ford identified this issue after discovering discrepancies in previous software updates. The company has confirmed no accidents or injuries have been reported in connection with this problem. Owners will be notified by mail and advised to visit a Ford or Lincoln dealership for a free PCM software update.
