A food vlogger from Palawan province in the Philippines, Emma Amit, has died after consuming a toxic devil crab for a social media video. The 51-year-old was seen cooking and eating the crab with coconut milk on February 4 before falling gravely ill the following day. She experienced convulsions and her condition worsened significantly, with her lips turning dark blue before she was declared dead on February 6.
Local officials are urging residents to be vigilant and refrain from eating seafood they are unfamiliar with. This incident follows a similar death in October last year, where a 54-year-old fisherman also perished from eating devil crabs. These crabs, also known as toxic reef crabs, contain potent neurotoxins that cooking does not neutralize.
Authorities are monitoring Emma's friends who were present during the seafood hunt. While her husband is an experienced fisher, confusion remains among officials about why Emma would consume such a dangerous crab. Discarded shells of the devil crabs were found among her rubbish, indicating she had consumed multiple crabs.
