In a harrowing incident on Saturday, August 8, a woman's arm was amputated following a severe alligator attack in Florida's Silver River. The victim was swimming when a nearly 10-foot alligator bit her arm and pulled her underwater. She was attempting to fend off the reptile with a paddle when the attack occurred.
John Gamache, a bystander, witnessed the distressing scene and immediately steered his boat towards the swimmers. His approach scared off the alligator, which had released the woman. Gamache provided crucial assistance by using a rope to tie off the victim's severe wound before transporting her and others to safety.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officers and an alligator trapper were dispatched to the scene. They successfully captured and removed the 9-foot-8-inch alligator responsible for the attack. The incident led to a temporary closure of Silver Lake.
The victim, whose identity has not been released, has since been discharged from the hospital and is recovering at home. Her family expressed gratitude to Gamache for his swift actions during the critical moments of the attack.
