A tragic school bus accident occurred in Winter Haven, Florida, on Monday morning, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a 10th-grade student. The bus, en route to Winter Haven High School, was carrying 39 people when an oncoming car crossed the center line.
The impact caused the school bus to flip onto its roof and collide with a Jeep, which subsequently caught fire. Authorities reported that one person from the Jeep also died. Multiple passengers on the bus sustained serious injuries, with one remaining in critical condition.
Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd described the event as a "horrible crash" and a "terrible, tragic morning," noting it as potentially the most severe bus tragedy in decades. This incident follows a separate, less severe crash involving a Polk County school bus just over a month prior.
School officials emphasized that safety drills are conducted for students on emergency bus evacuations. The overturned bus came to rest beside the road, its front end heavily damaged, highlighting the severity of the collision.
