Tears and Hugs: A Firefighter Family's 9/11 Reunion

Family members recently convened at the New York Fire Department's Engine 54, Ladder 4, Battalion 9 firehouse for a memorial breakfast. This gathering commemorated the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, during which all 15 firefighters who responded from this station tragically perished. The event provided a space for relatives to reconnect and remember their loved ones, with many highlighting the responsibility to carry on the legacy as parents of the fallen are no longer able to attend.

Kathleen Lynch Martens, whose brother Michael Lynch was among the fallen, shared a newspaper clipping from the day his remains were identified months after the attacks. The breakfast, filled with the smell of coffee and the camaraderie of uniformed firefighters, was followed by a ceremony at Firefighters Memorial Park. This solemn occasion saw participation from firefighters representing nations such as Canada and New Zealand, as well as other U.S. cities like Chicago and Las Vegas, underscoring a global acknowledgment of their sacrifice.

Vaughn Mulder, a firefighter from Miami-Dade, emphasized the importance of passing down traditions to newer generations of firefighters, many of whom joined the service after 9/11. Linda Taccetta, whose brother Leonard Ragaglia was lost from Engine 54, attends annually despite living in Pennsylvania, describing the firehouse as a comforting "home" and an extension of family. She noted the annual anxiety leading up to September but finds solace and peace upon arrival.
