On Friday, the FAU community gathered at Flagler Credit Union Stadium to honor the 2,976 lives lost 25 years ago on September 11, 2001. The solemn ceremony recognized the victims and the bravery of first responders during the tragic events of that day.
Following the ceremony, over 100 participants engaged in the Stadium Stair Climb Challenge. This event involved a 10-round ascent of 2,050 steps, symbolizing the 110 floors first responders bravely climbed in the World Trade Center. Larry Ervin, a former NYPD officer and retired FAU police captain, delivered a compelling testimony about his firsthand experience of the attacks.
FAU President Adam Hasner underscored the critical role of older generations in educating younger ones about 9/11. He stressed the responsibility to keep the memory of victims and heroes alive. Browning Collison of Alpha Tau Omega highlighted the fraternity's connection to the 22 Project, supporting PTSD and TBI treatment, and expressed pride in the community's support for survivors and fallen heroes.
Lieutenant Karl Richards of Boca Raton Fire Rescue also attended, emphasizing the message of remembrance for civilians and the 343 firefighters lost. He shared that his 20 years as a firefighter were profoundly influenced by 9/11, solidifying his passion for service.
