Tragedy struck near Avadi as a van carrying pilgrims overturned early Tuesday morning, resulting in one fatality and 18 injuries. The incident occurred around 6 am on the Minjur-Vandalur Bypass Road when the van, en route to the Siruvapuri Murugan Temple, veered off the road.
The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to strike a roadside barrier and overturn into a ditch. Sadly, Revathi, a 20-year-old devotee, died at the scene. Her infant child is now in the care of family members.
All 22 passengers and 4 crew members were en route from Villupuram district. Preliminary investigations suggest driver drowsiness may have contributed to the accident. The van sustained severe damage, with a wheel detaching and the front badly mangled.
The injured pilgrims were promptly rescued and admitted to Tiruvallur government hospital. Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the accident.
