A local surfer, identified as Tadashi, tragically lost his life following a shark attack at Shelly Beach. The incident occurred as the surfer was sitting on his board approximately 10 meters from the shore when a shark reportedly attacked the back of his board.
His fellow surfers immediately assisted, bringing him to shore and attempting resuscitation, but he was pronounced deceased by paramedics. Mayor David Wright of Ballina expressed the town's profound shock, noting the victim's local ties and the swiftness of the fatality due to significant leg injuries.
This attack happened only hours after another surfer, Jabez Reitman, reported being bitten by a 2-to-3-meter shark on nearby Seven Mile Beach, near Byron Bay. Authorities have closed Shelly Beach and a wider coastal area to search for the shark involved.
While shark sightings are common along Australia's coasts, fatal attacks are statistically rare, with an average of fewer than two per year in recent decades. This incident marks the sixth shark attack in two months, with a previous fatal attack occurring in Byron Bay in September.
